Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a serious eye condition that can lead to vision loss and even blindness if left untreated. Inside your eye, there’s a fluid that normally flows in and out to maintain a healthy pressure. Glaucoma happens when this fluid doesn’t drain properly, causing pressure to build up over time. This increased pressure can damage the optic nerve. Once the optic nerve is damaged, it can’t be repaired, and this can result in gradual irreversible peripheral vision loss.
The tricky part about glaucoma is that it often develops slowly and without noticeable symptoms in the early stages. People may not even realize they have it until they’ve already lost some vision. That’s why regular eye check-ups are crucial, especially as we get older, to catch glaucoma early on. Treatment options include prescription eye drops, steroid medications or surgery, all aimed at lowering the eye pressure to prevent further damage to the optic nerve.
Regular eye check-ups are essential, and early detection and treatment can help manage the condition and prevent serious complications.
